Challenge
The distribution center in Oakland, New Jersey relied on 520 legacy HiBay fixtures drawing 377 watts each — a combined load of 196 kilowatts across 92,400 square feet of active floor space. Running 10 hours a day, five days a week, those fixtures represented a substantial and largely avoidable operating cost for the facility. The aging high-bay lighting also left maintenance as an ongoing concern given the output and heat characteristics of the prior technology.
Solution
VK Light Solutions replaced all 520 existing HiBay fixtures with DLC-listed LED HiBay fixtures rated at 105 watts each, bringing the facility's total connected lighting load down from 196.0 kW to 54.6 kW. The retrofit was executed on a one-for-one basis, preserving the existing mounting positions and distribution throughout the 92,400 square foot facility. No structural or electrical infrastructure changes were required beyond the fixture swap itself.
Energy Savings
The retrofit eliminated 367,744 kWh of electricity consumption per year, a 72% reduction from the facility's prior lighting load. At the facility's rate of $0.18 per kWh, that reduction translates to $66,194 in annual dollar savings. The project also avoids an estimated 312,582 pounds of CO2 emissions each year.
Results
The Oakland distribution center now operates with a lighting system that draws less than a third of the electricity the prior HiBays required, delivering $66,194 in recurring annual utility savings. The shift to LED HiBay technology reduces lamp replacement frequency and associated maintenance labor across all 520 fixtures.
